Itinerary
Your guide will meet you at the Galata Cruise Port Passenger Terminal, a convenient location for cruise passengers and visitors staying in central Istanbul.
After a brief introduction to the day’s itinerary, we begin our journey to the historic Old City.
Transportation to the Old City
To reach Sultanahmet, we use Istanbul’s modern public tram system, the fastest and most efficient way to travel between districts and avoid heavy city traffic.
The tram ride also provides a glimpse into everyday life in Istanbul as we travel across the Golden Horn toward the historic peninsula.
Public transportation tickets are not included. Guests can easily pay using their own contactless credit cards.

Stop 1: Hagia Sophia
Our first stop is one of the most extraordinary monuments in the world.
Originally built in 537 AD as the largest cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, Hagia Sophia later became an imperial Ottoman mosque and remains one of the most important landmarks of Istanbul today.
During the guided visit you will:
• Admire the magnificent central dome
• Discover ancient Byzantine mosaics
• Learn how the building reflects both Christian and Islamic history
• Hear stories about emperors, sultans, and the conquest of Constantinople

Stop 2: Sultan Ahmed Mosque
Just across the square stands the famous Blue Mosque, one of the finest examples of classical Ottoman architecture.

• Elegant domes and semi-domes
• Stained glass windows and soft natural light

Stop 3: Hippodrome of Constantinople
Next, we walk through the historic square that once served as the political and social center of Byzantine Constantinople.
In ancient times, this was the location of spectacular chariot races and imperial ceremonies attended by thousands of spectators.
Important monuments still standing today include:
• The Obelisk of Theodosius
• The Serpent Column from Delphi
• The Walled Obelisk
Your guide will share the dramatic stories of rival chariot teams and the famous Nika Revolt, one of the most important events in Byzantine history.

Stop 4: Basilica Cistern
From the bright square above ground we descend into the mysterious underground world of the Basilica Cistern.
Built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian, this vast underground reservoir once supplied water to the Great Palace of Constantinople.
Inside the cistern you will discover:
• 336 marble columns rising from the water
• Atmospheric lighting and reflections
• The famous Medusa head column bases
• Advanced Byzantine engineering

Stop 5: Grand Bazaar
The final stop of the tour is the legendary Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world.
With more than 4,000 shops and centuries of history, the bazaar has been a center of trade since the Ottoman era.
During our visit we stop at a carefully selected local shop for a short cultural presentation about traditional Turkish hand-woven carpets and handicrafts.
Guests will learn about:
• Regional carpet patterns and symbolism
• Natural vegetable dyes
• Traditional weaving techniques
• How to recognize quality craftsmanship
